Newborn Clothes Guide: Size and Weight , When To Buy And More!

A new baby is an exciting time for any family, and one of the first things you’ll consider is if you should buy newborn clothes. With so many choices and so many things to consider, it can be hard to know where to start.

You’ll need to decide how much to spend, what style of clothing you want, and what size to buy. Before you start shopping, it’s important to understand the basics of newborn baby clothes.

Newborn clothes fit babies up to two months and around 9 pounds.

This newborn clothing guide will help you choose the best clothes for your new baby, so you can focus on enjoying those first few weeks.

Should You Buy Newborn Size Clothes?

The answer is maybe. If you have friends or family who are willing to give you hand-me-downs, then you may not need to buy as many new items. However, if you want your child to have a fresh start with brand-new clothes, that’s okay, too.

What is considered a newborn baby? Doctors generally consider a baby to be newborn from birth until around 2 months of age. However, some research studies may use the term “newborn” to refer to babies up to 28 days or 4 weeks old.

Newborns are typically between 6 and 9 pounds and 20 to 22 inches long. But every baby is different, so it’s important not to get too hung up on these numbers.

    Weight For Newborn Clothes

Newborn clothes typically fit babies up to 9 pounds.

    Sizing Info For Newborn Clothes

Newborn clothes typically come in standard sizing that fit a variety of babies from preemie, newborn and 0-3 months.

What Is The Difference Between Newborn Clothing and 0-3 Months Clothing?

Baby clothes that are 0-3 months are designed to fit babies up to 12 pounds. Newborn size clothing is slightly smaller. Previously we stated that a baby can be considered a newborn up until around 2 months of age.

In just month babies can grow up to ½ to 1 inches and gain 1.5 to 2 pounds in just this short amount of time.

So there might not be drastic difference in these two clothing sizes, generally the 0-3 month clothes will fit a slightly older and larger baby.

Yes, newborns can wear size 0-3 clothes. Depending on the size of your child, you may have to adjust the sleeves or pants to accommodate your child.

How Many Newborn Clothes Do I Need?

If you’re on the fence about whether to buy newborn size clothes, here are a few things to consider. Newborns grow quickly, so you’ll likely only get a few weeks of use out of them.

However, newborn size clothes are often cuter and more practical for very tiny babies. Ultimately, the decision of whether to buy newborn size clothes is up to you and your budget.

    Recommended Quantities

On average, most parents do laundry once or twice a week. You will be doing a lot of laundry due to frequent diaper changes and spit ups. Changing baby’s clothes at least twice a day means you will need at least 14 outfits.

    Bodysuits or onesies : 4-8

    Sleep and plays : 4-8

    Bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts): 4-6

    Socks: 4-8

    Winter Clothes Recommendations

In addition to regular clothes, if your newborn is going to be leaving home in the winter there are just a few more winter essentials you will need.

A warm coat is essential to keep your little one cozy in the cold weather. You will also need a hat and gloves or mittens to protect their head and hands from the elements. Layering is key when dressing a newborn in the winter, so don’t forget to put a few layers of clothing under their coat.

    Summer Clothes Recommendations

Here are a few must-haves for your baby’s summer wardrobe.

First, you’ll need some light-weight onesies or bodysuits. These are perfect for layering under other clothes or for wearing on their own when it’s really hot out.

You’ll also want to have a few pairs of shorts or skirts and short-sleeved shirts. Look for items that are made from breathable fabrics like cotton so your baby stays cool and comfortable.

Don’t forget about swimwear! A one-piece bathing suit or swim diaper is essential for those days spent at the pool or beach.

How Long Do Newborn Clothes Last?

Most newborns will only wear their clothes for a few months before they outgrow them. This can be frustrating for parents who have spent a lot of money on newborn clothes, but it is important to remember that babies grow very quickly.

There are a few things you can do to make sure your newborn’s clothes last as long as possible. First, buy clothes that are made from durable materials. Second, buy clothes that are adjustable so they can be worn for longer periods of time. Finally, buy some neutral-colored clothing items so they can be worn by future siblings.

Should Newborn Clothes Be Washed Before Wearing?

Before you dress your newborn in that cute new outfit, you might want to wash it first. Here’s why:

Newborns have sensitive skin and are more prone to rashes and other skin problems. Washing their clothes before they wear them can help remove any harmful chemicals or irritants that may be present.

Additionally, washing newborn clothing before wearing can also help remove any potential allergens that could cause a reaction. If you’re not sure whether an item is safe for your baby, err on the side of caution and wash it first.

So while it might take a little extra time, washing your newborn’s clothes before they wear them is always the best bet.

    Folding Newborn Clothes

New parents have a lot to learn, and one of those things is how to fold newborn clothes. Here are some tips on how to do it:

Start with a onesie. Lay it flat on a surface and be sure to smooth out any wrinkles or lumps before folding. Fold in the sleeves.

Next, fold the bottom up so that it meets the top of the onesie.

Now you can fold the onesie in half, making sure that the sides are even.

When folding pants, start by laying them flat and folding in the legs at the seams.

Fold the legs up towards the waistband and they’re ready to be stored away.

A Note About Newborn Clothes And Shoes

While you’re shopping for clothes you might wonder if newborn babies need shoes. Your newborn does not need shoes until they start walking. The only thing you’ll need for now are socks!

In conclusion, you should buy newborn size clothing if you want a few smaller outfits made for a smaller baby and your budget allows for it. You can always return or exchange items that don’t fit, so there’s no harm in buying a few different sizes. Just make sure to keep the receipts!
