Um, hello open back hospital gown.
Remember how cold it was when you took your hospital tour? Yeah, its that cold 24/7.
Don’t worry, I’m going to let you know what you will want to pack in your bag so you’ll know what to wear after giving birth in the hospital.
Even if you’re reading this check list last minute, or if you’ve been down this road before, you’ll want to make sure you have these essentials.
After giving birth, it is important to wear comfortable clothing that will enable you to heal and feel good. There are many different types of postpartum clothing available, so it is important to find something that suits your needs. Here are some tips on what to wear after giving birth:
Choose comfortable clothing: After giving birth, you will want to wear clothes that are comfortable and easy to move in. Avoid anything constricting or tight-fitting as this can irritate your skin and make you feel uncomfortable.
Checklist: What To Wear After Giving Birth In The Hospital
1. Comfortable Underwear
There’s a reason this is at the top of my list.
When you’ve given birth and you want to hold it all in, comfortable underwear is going to be your best friend.
Whether you’ve given birth vaginally or c-section, you will want the comfort and security of full underwear.
Now is not the time for those barely there underwear, thongs, cheeksters, etc. You get my drift?
Consider your healing: If you have had a C-section, you will need to take extra care when choosing what to wear. Avoid anything that puts pressure on your stomach or back, as this can delay healing and cause discomfort.

2. Maternity or Nursing Bra
You may be nursing and your baby needs to get to the boob quickly or visitors are dropping by and you don’t want your breasts out.
Under either circumstance you won’t want to wear a conventional bra with wires, stiff cups or itchy material.
There are so many cute nursing bra options and the cool thing is that they come with straps that drop down with one hand for easy access to the breast.

If you’re not nursing these are just plain comfortable. No underwire and stretchy breathable fabric for your changing breasts.
3. Cozy Socks/ Slipper Socks
Hear me out, even if you don’t normally wear socks or like to be barefooted, you will want socks in the hospital.
That floor is cold, hard and slippery.
Unless your hospital is nice and provides you with slippers, you’ll need something to cover your feet. Plus, cozy socks are just a fluffy pick me up.

4. Robe
This is completely optional, but I think it adds a nice touch if you’re having photos taken at the hospital.
The pretty print is sure to brighten up your hospital room. It can also help you feel cute during a time where it’s easy to feel a little less confident.
Greet visitors in style and cherish your hospital photos with baby in your stylish robe.

Soft, warm, relaxed. 3 things you’ll want to be after labor and delivery.
Loose pajamas don’t have to be ugly. Here are a couple of options for you and I’ve included some nursing pajamas!

3 Piece Soft Nursing Pajama Set
Short Sleeved Nursing Pajamas- several color options
6. Headwrap/hair ties/ headband
Chances are you will probably want your hair up and out of the way.
Unless you already planned some type of hair style or protective hair style, post baby hospital stay is not the time to do your hair.
These work for getting your hair out of your face and they’re beautiful!
7. Leggings/Joggers/Stretchy Pants
This depends on your personal style, but the main thing that these pants have in common is that they are forgiving.
The fabric needs to be stretchy. Fitted pants are just not going to be something you’ll want to wear.
Don’t even think about packing jeans. These make it easy to cherish every moment with your little one without feeling constricted.

Can You Wear Jeans After Giving Birth?
The answer is yes, but you probably won’t want to right away. Immediately after giving birth your first choice will likely be soft, stretchy, forgiving fabrics that will allow your body to heal. Think, leggings or pajama pants.
But, just because your post-baby body is different, doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite jeans. You can still wear jeans after giving birth, you just might need to look for a different style or material.
For example, many new moms love jeggings. Jeggings are like leggings, but they look like jeans. They’re usually made of a stretchy material, so they’re comfortable to wear. And, they have a waistband that sits below the belly, so it’s perfect for hiding any extra weight around the midsection.
Can You Wear Compression Leggings After Giving Birth?
Compression leggings are designed to help with circulation and support your muscles. They may be worn during pregnancy and postpartum, but make sure to check with your doctor first.
After delivery, you’ll want to make sure the leggings have a comfortable waistband that won’t put any pressure on your incision site. Look for a pair made from breathable material that will help you stay cool and comfortable as you heal.
What To Wear After Labor And Delivery
There you have it, a list of clothing essentials that you will help you get your hospital bag together.
No more wondering what to wear after giving birth at the hospital, you’ve got a solid list to work from.
You don’t need every single item on this list, but hopefully you can pack a few cozy selections.
In the event your due date is not a firmly scheduled date, you won’t know when you’ll go in to labor.
Therefore, you’ll want to pack your bag in advance. Packing your bag and having your own soft, comfy options has its advantages.
By all means, you could forgo this list and wear the hospital gown. However, bringing your own clothes gives you a couple of perks:
- You’ll feel more comfortable in your own clothes
- When visitors stop by you’ll be presentable
- Prepared for hospital temperatures which can be extremely cold
- Having post delivery clothes, you won’t ruin your nice clothes
Congratulations mama! Wishing you a happy, healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery.
